The objectives of the course are to increase the student's understanding of the normal physiology of the lower gastrointestinal tract, common pathophysiologic processes affecting the anus, rectum and colon, and operative and nonoperative therapies of malignant and benign colorectal disease. During the elective, the student will participate in a busy surgical service which will introduce him to junior house officer responsibilities.

Course Outline

The student will be assigned to one of the Colon and Rectal Surgery teams. The student will participate in all activities of the team, including care of inpatients, outpatient sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, and anorectal physiology laboratory. Also, the student will be an integral part of the operating room team. In addition, the student will participate in all didactic activities of the department, including presentation of patients at conferences. The student will provide at least one in-depth discussion of the surgical approach to a specific disease of the colon or rectum.
