Objectives

To gain exposure to major aspects of anatomic and clinical pathology including evaluation of surgical specimens and daily practice of laboratory medicine at a large medical center.

Course Outline

This four week elective is offered year round with a current maximum of 2 students per rotation. All aspects of anatomic and clinical pathology will be available for the rotating students. Objectives include familiarity with surgical pathology grossing techniques and tissue sign-out procedures. Specialized areas available for study include Gastrointestinal and Hepatic pathology, Transplant pathology, Cytopathology, and Hematopathology. The student will also gain an understanding of immunohistochemistry as a diagnostic tool. The student will observe functions in microbiology and chemistry laboratories and blood banks including on-site collection centers. Attendance at multi-disciplinary working conferences (Tumor Board, Breast Core Biopsy Conference, Colorectal Surgery Conference) is required. Observation of intraoperative consultations, fine needle aspiration, and a postmortem examination are expected. An oral presentation on the topic of the student’s choice will be observed at the conclusion of the elective.

Method of Evaluation

Evaluation will be primarily based on participation in the above mentioned activities.
