Pulmonary Hypertension Conference 2018

Pulmonary Hypertension Conference 2018

In 2013, world experts in pulmonary hypertension met at the 5th World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension in Nice, France. They reviewed the progress that has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension, redefined the classification of Pulmonary Hypertension, and formulated proposals for areas of future research.  It was determined that multidisciplinary, multicenter collaborative efforts will lead to improved treatment for all patients with PH.  Although the tools used to diagnose PH have improved, the number and complexity of therapeutic options have made it challenging to predict prognosis.  What is clear is that prompt diagnosis, assessment of severity of disease and initiation of appropriate therapy impact survival.  Unfortunately, patients have symptoms for approximately 2.4 years before the diagnosis is made, reflecting a knowledge gap in the community which affects both patient morbidity and mortality. This CME event is meant to educate referring physicians in the Gulf South and hopefully reduce the time to diagnosis and treatment in patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Learning objectives

  • Describe advances in the management of pulmonary hypertension
  • Determine when to suspect pulmonary hypertension and how to diagnose it
  • Explain the current approach to pulmonary hypertension in the presence of associated or underlying disease; Connective Tissue Disease, left-sided heart disease, and Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Review when to refer the patient with pulmonary hypertension for lung transplantation
