  • Are there any charges for services?

    Medical Library resources and services are provided at no charge. There is also no charge for interlibrary loan or document delivery, whether ordered through ILLiad or Loansome Doc. However, users who fail to return borrowed materials are billed the replacement cost plus a $25 processing fee for each unreturned item.

  • Are different services available for different types of users?

    All services are available to all of our users, with a few exceptions:

    • Checkout of circulating materials is available only to staff with a valid Ochsner ID.
    • Interlibrary loan service is available only to current Ochsner-affiliated staff.
    • Help for a student is limited to general use of Medical Library resources—staff does not perform searches, research, or other assigned class work.
  • Where do I access Medical Library online resources?

    Electronic resources are accessible in Epic and through our website. Links to resources for access to subscribed content only work for computers that can be recognized as belonging to Ochsner. All computers accessing the Internet via the Ochsner network are automatically recognized and grant access to all subscribed content.

  • How can I access online resources from outside the Ochsner network?

    Ochsner provides remote access to its network via OHSLink. Enter your Ochsner username and password for remote access.

  • What is the process for checking out a book?

    All of the print books in the Medical Library collection are available for circulation to Ochsner-affiliated users, except for reference books, rare books, and bound volumes of periodicals. Circulating books may be checked out for three weeks at a time. Print books can be checked out in person during our office hours, or we can mail them to your location. Electronic books can be checked out directly from our online catalog.

  • How do I get materials (articles, chapters, books) not in the Medical Library collection?

    We use a system called ILLiad to process interlibrary loan requests. ILLiad requires registration (at no charge) for a user account. ILLiad account holders can submit ILL requests quickly and easily from many of our online resources. Register for an Ochsner-affiliated ILLiad account.

  • How can I learn more about the Medical Library?

    Our staff can demonstrate or offer guidance in using our resources—unscheduled or by appointment. We can provide anything from a brief overview of services to customized, in-depth, hands-on training in essential resources. Contact us to present at your next meeting.
