Medical Library Operations During COVID-19
Current status: The Medical Library continues to operate at full capacity, with all electronic and online services available. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the physical space of the Medical Library is reserved for clinical staff use, and closed to visitors and guests until further notice.
Resources and Services Available
Off-site access to our subscribed web-based resources is available to current Ochsner staff, students, and employees. With the majority of our collection available online, accessing subscribed journals, eBooks, and databases is fairly easy. Read about the ways to reach our full-text holdings.
Requesting journal articles and book chapters continues as usual. Submit requests via the ILLiad system.
Please understand response time may decline due to reduced participation of libraries in our reciprocal network. Interlibrary borrowing of books and other items that require physical handling is suspended until further notice.
Ochsner staff and employees can still make lit search requests using our online form. Medical librarians are working remotely to provide searches on biomedical or health care-related topics. Turnaround for requests should be quick. If your search is urgent, please let us know.
- Print books may be borrowed by students and employees who have physical access to the Medical Library facility. Email us with your first and last name and each book's title and barcode, and we will handle the check-out in our system remotely. The barcode sticker is usually on the inside back cover; it is an eight-digit number beginning with 920.
- To renew a checked-out book, send us an email or start a Live Chat.
- To return a book, use the book drop by the exterior door to the Medical Library, or the book drop at the Medical Library front desk. Be sure to let us know by email or Live Chat which books you have returned, and we will update our records.
- At this time, print books cannot be reserved as we are currently unable to accommodate the transfer of books from one patron to another.
Ochsner staff and employees may still request an audiobook account. Please allow 2 to 3 business days for audiobook activation. After setting-up an account, remember there is a maximum of two (2) audiobooks per month that you may download.
Support for Archival requests such as historical photos is fully functioning at this time. Most requests can be delivered digitally. Physical access to the archive collection is not available at this time.
We appreciate all recommendations and suggestions to improve our collection. However, given the focus on resources for COVID-19, it will be an especially difficult to time to have new materials added.
