Outpatient rotation includes daily clinic from 8 am to 5pm. Continuity clinic is on Wednesday from 1 to 5 pm. We see new referrals, new donor evaluations, patients referred for combined transplants and follow ups in the waiting list.

During a typical day a fellow may see from 8 to 10 patients (40 patients a week).

The transplant nephrology fellow usually rotates with fellows from other institutions including Louisiana State University (New Orleans) , LSU (Shreveport) and Ochsner Medical Center (our well recognized general nephrology fellowship training program).

1 to 2 donors daily, 3 new referrals for kidney transplant per day and 5 follow ups after kidney transplantation.

Fellows rotating in our transplant department are expected to:

  • Be ready for teaching rounds at 9:30 a.m.
  • Attend the clinics on time
  • Communicate with transplant nurses in clinic regarding care plan for patients evaluated in clinic. Clinic encounters and progress notes are expected to be filed as soon as possible.
  • Attend the scheduled conferences
  • Provide contact information to the Ochsner operator including personal cell phone
  • Respond to consults promptly. It is strongly suggested to check KTS and KTM transplant census periodically during the day to avoid delays in consults to primary services.
  • Communicate efficiently to primary teams and transplant staff
  • Participate actively during teaching rounds
  • Interact with transplant coordinators, transplant fellows (surgical and medicine fellow) and consulting physicians
  • Attend the conference during the Ochsner rotations (including pathology conference if time permits)
  • Attend transplant lectures scheduled on Wednesdays at 12 p.m.
  • Read papers sent in prior email and to maintain a reading conductive to learning according with ACGME core curriculum. Please ask for electronic versions of suggested readings.

Our transplant nephrologists are committed to teaching and education. It is strongly encouraged that the rotating fellows to take advantage of this time at Ochsner to improve your skills in the field of nephrology and prepare for the Nephrology Board Certification exam.
