After a long journey, Drs. Suessman and, recently graduated UQ-Ochsner Clinical School alumni, Jennifer Horton made it to India. They were warmly greeted by Kasturba Medical College (KMC) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Here they and Dr. Warrier presented a CME session entitled, "Pediatric Emergenceis." The following day they traveled to KMC's other campus in Mangalore and presented lectures on pediatric malpractice diagnoses, bronchiolitis, abdominal pain, asthma, fever, hematology, oncology and irritable bowel disease. Each session began with a traditional prayer lighting ceremony and ended with so much gratitude. Attendees included faculty, junior and senior house staff, medical and undergraduate students. The Ochsner group also met with KMC leadership to discuss this ongoing relationship across two hemispheres. They hope for Dr. Suessman's return in the near future to develop KMC's pediatric emergency medicine curriculum.
After a quick afternoon being outfitted with sarees and lehengas, Drs. Suessman and Horton visited a few temples before leaving the southern part of the country. Next, they flew to Gujarat, Ahmedabad to attend the world's largest international pediatric conference with IPA/IAP at Gandhinagar Mahatma Mandir Convention Center. Here, they attended multiple sessions and networked with pediatricians representing 120 countries and showcased their combined nine abstract posters. The next day, Dr. Suessman gave a platform presentation on pediatric trauma to large auditorium of enraptured entities.
The last couple of days, Drs. Horton and Suessman explored Delhi, ending their trip with a magnificent tour of the Taj Mahal.
This trip was not only memorable but impactful on both of their young careers and shared passion for medical education, research and collaboration across the globe.
