In Memoriam - Dr. Paul Farmer - 1959-2022
An iconic figure in the field of global health and social justice. His sudden and unexpected death this year at the age of 62 sent shockwaves of pain globally and for me personally. He was a true soldier for social justice, human dignity and health equity for all. He devoted his life and career to the cause of ending structural violence and promoting health equity for all through the lens of equity. The book Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man who would cure the World - had a profound influence on me, our students, our staff and the vison of our UQ/Ochsner Clinical School program. Dr. Paul Farmer and Ochsner Health had one thing very much in common; that is our appreciation of the infinite power of the Haitian experience to profoundly inspire young medical trainees, residents and staff to become global citizens with a desire to also cure the world.
