Ochsner Health currently sponsors 31 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency and fellowship training programs in medical and surgical specialties in the greater New Orleans area. Ochsner’s commitment to medical education growth is now expanding with our partners located at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center (OLGMC).
In 2020, Ochsner Health joined forces with Lafayette General Health to form Ochsner Lafayette General (OLG), a best-in-class health system serving patients throughout Acadiana. In creating OLG, Ochsner announced a 10-year, nearly half-billion-dollar investment in this region of Louisiana. As part of this commitment to the region, Ochsner pledged to invest in graduate medical education at OLGMC to help train the physicians of the future.
On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, OLG leadership gathered for their first Graduate Medical Education Committee meeting. Prior to the inaugural meeting, leadership witnessed signing by Ziad Ashkar, MD, the site’s Designated Institutional Official (DIO), of the ACGME document required to initiate OLGMC’s intent to apply for Sponsoring Institution Accreditation.
The application will be submitted to the ACGME later this month with anticipated receipt of Initial Accreditation expected to occur by October 2022. Shortly after, OLGMC plans to submit application for its first ACGME-accredited program in Surgery, to begin effective July 1, 2024.
Graduate Medical Education at Ochsner is dedicated to creating a positive and lasting impact on the health of the communities we serve by providing positive clinical outcomes to our patients and by educating the physician leaders of tomorrow.
