Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia training is a 1-year program at Ochsner Medical Center. A prerequisite for entry into the program is completion of 4 years of accredited training in anesthesia. Adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology is devoted to the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of adult patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery and related invasive procedures. The fellowship is structured to provide fellows with the opportunity to develop skills in clinical care, judgment, teaching, and research beyond the core curriculum. At the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow should be able to function as an independent consultant in the anesthetic care of cardiothoracic surgery patients.

The aim of this training program is to graduate physicians fully competent in all facets of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. Our graduates will be prepared to serve as expert consultants in perioperative echocardiography. Our fellows will learn the skills necessary to be leaders in quality and patient safety. We also hope to inspire our graduates to be leaders in their communities and mentor trainees/learners they come into contact with. Through scholarly activity, our fellows will continue to advance the sub-specialty of cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Finally, our fellowship will serve to strengthen the core residency program as our fellows partner with the residents to guide them through complex cases and further pique their interest in the subspecialty of cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
