The Ochsner DR residency is a categorical 5-year program which is expanding, now recruiting 8 DR residents per year. The associated rotating internship includes 2 months of radiology. Our faculty in the New Orleans area includes over 50 radiologists. Residents typically receive one didactic lecture per day, and there are numerous multispecialty conferences each week in which residents present and participate. Ochsner brings in many visiting lecturers, and we hold journal clubs at local restaurants quarterly.

Ochsner is continuing to expand with significant investments in our tertiary care ICU tower, outpatient diagnostic centers, and pediatric services. A new pediatric hospital is being built adjacent to our tertiary care medical center, and a freestanding Neuroscience Center of Excellence building is nearing completion across the street.

Some of the main strengths of our DR program include neuroradiology, body imaging, MSK, and breast imaging. Residents read a high volume of cross-sectional case material in all sections. We have a highly specialized staff in all sections who are engaged in teaching and resident mentorship. There are many opportunities to perform research, present at scientific meetings, and become involved with national societies. There are also moonlighting opportunities to cover for contrast reactions in our outpatient imaging centers on weekends.

Most of the residency experience is at the main flagship hospital, Ochnser Medical Center. We recently added limited rotations at two other local Ochsner facilities to enhance the resident experience. The Ochsner Health System is vast, and all studies are accessible on the integrated PACS, offering a large volume of primary and tertiary clinical material from which the residents will learn. Ochsner is also the hub of a 53-hospital stroke network which is served by our neuroradiology and neurointerventional faculty.

Our busy body IR section performs the full gamut of procedures in which residents will receive a high level of training and experience. The Ochsner IR service is known for performing more Y-90 liver embolizations than any other hospital in the world, and our liver transplant team is outstanding. We have an ESIR pathway so residents interested in pursuing IR will be well-prepared for an advanced 2nd year position in an independent IR program. We also offer one Integrated IR position per year.

Ochsner graduates are well trained and highly capable when they graduate. We have a high core exam pass rate, and around 90% of our graduates enter competitive fellowships. Almost half of our radiology faculty are former Ochsner graduates, which is a testament to the collegial residency experience we provide. As a bonus, New Orleans is a vibrant city that attracts people from across the globe for its rich culture, food, music, and festivals. We are excited about the future of our residency, and we hope to recruit residents who will share our positive vision.
