Advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology is a rapidly expanding subspecialty dedicated to the care of patients with some of the most complex cardiovascular conditions. As treatment options continue to evolve through innovations in mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, and advanced medical therapies, physicians require specialized training that combines clinical expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a deep understanding of emerging technologies. The Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant fellow plays an integral role in the management of a wide pathologic spectrum of clinical heart failure, to include initial diagnostic evaluation, chronic management strategies, high-risk cardiac surgical and percutaneous interventions, remote hemodynamic monitoring device (CardioMEMS), candidate selection for heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. The Advanced Heart failure fellow will also actively participate in Donor evaluation and post-transplant management including immunosuppression and pulmonary artery catheterization and endomyocardial biopsies.
As part of one of the Gulf South’s premier cardiovascular programs, fellows train within a healthcare system recognized for its commitment to innovation, research, and patient-centered care. The fellowship offers exposure to a diverse and complex patient population, allowing trainees to develop expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of advanced heart failure. Fellows work closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, transplant specialists, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals dedicated to improving outcomes for patients with advanced cardiac disease.
The program emphasizes both clinical excellence and academic development. Fellows gain valuable experience managing patients across the continuum of care, from advanced medical therapies and inpatient heart failure management to heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. Through participation in research initiatives, quality improvement projects, and educational conferences, trainees are encouraged to contribute to the advancement of the field while developing the skills necessary for lifelong learning and professional growth.
