Primary Care Internal Medicine Track (3 years)

Ochsner recognizes the importance of primary care and is committed to educating primary care physicians. The Primary Care track is for residents looking at pursuing careers in Primary Care. The curriculum differs from the regular categorical track by emphasizing an enhanced training in outpatient medicine. The 4+2 scheduling of our regular categorical program ensures that at least one third of your training will be outpatient. Primary Care track residents spend an additional 3 month block the second year and two additional 3 month blocks third year in the outpatient setting During these blocks the residents concentrate on providing care for their primary care panel and spend time in outpatient subspecialties to enhance their abilities as a primary care provider. The residents have a patient panel that they follow all three years.

The curriculum includes topics of caring for the elderly, population medicine, mental health issues , substance abuse, the LGBTQIA+ community, and the underinsured. We also discuss EMR documentation, billing, and different practice models to prepare residents for careers in primary care.
