Ochsner is committed to a clinically-integrated research program with the ultimate goal of improving the health and wellness of our patients and communities. And as the largest academic medical center in Louisiana, we are training the next generation of healthcare professionals to be leaders who can meet evolving healthcare challenges.
The structure of the residency program guarantees the continuity of care in the resident/patient relationship and assures comprehensive preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care. The resident is assigned to one faculty member or subspecialty for 3-month rotations. During this rotation, the resident is involved in all outpatient, inpatient, and operative care of the patient. This affords the opportunity to initially evaluate the patient with the faculty member, follow the preoperative conservative care if indicated, discuss operative options with faculty, assist or perform the surgery with faculty supervision, perform postoperative hospital care, and follow postoperative rehabilitation and progress in the clinic. All rotations follow this educational design, which promotes global care and direct interaction in the decision making process. We feel strongly that with this model, we are not training technicians but rather surgeons competent in all aspects of patient care.
The Duty Hours Policy of the Department of Podiatry complies in all aspects with both the Institutional Duty Hours Policy of Ochsner Medical Center and CPME guidelines of 80 hours per week duty limit. No resident is assigned on primary call for more than 2 weekend days on a 4-weekend month or 3 weekend days for a 5-weekend month. All residents have at least 2 weekends per month free of all clinical responsibility. The institutional duty hour guidelines are strictly monitored to ensure that no single shift exceeds 30 continuous duty hours. If the resident on call has remained in-house for his/her entire 24-hour shift, he/she is relieved of further duties the following morning after morning rounds. The Podiatric faculty is committed to maintaining a safe environment for both patient care and resident education.
