The Ochsner Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety Center is located at 1401 Jefferson Highway on the North Campus of the Ochsner Medical Center in the Center for Academic Excellence. Our new facility provides 8,300 square feet of space and access to state-of-the-art simulation technology for healthcare training designed to improve the quality of healthcare while reducing the likelihood of medical errors.

Improving and protecting safety for patients is our number one priority. The center is designed to be a multi-disciplinary, interprofessional training center with simulation-based educational deliverables focusing in TeamSTEPPS, a teamwork system that promotes patient safety and quality through the advancement of teamwork. It offers a powerful solution to improving collaboration and communication, with key initiatives that transform the culture within health care. It is an evidence-based program aimed at optimizing performance among teams of health care professionals, enabling them to respond quickly and effectively to whatever situations arise. The simulation center trains attending physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, advance practice providers, allied health professionals, and other healthcare professionals with deliverables ranging from basic-skills training, competency-based education, to technologically advanced procedural innovations.

The mission of the Ochsner Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety Center is to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes through delivery of high-quality experiential integrated team-based learning to the Ochsner Health System, Ochsner Health System Partners, and the communities each serve.

To engage practicing medical professionals and clinical students, residents, and fellows, in the full spectrum of a technology-rich clinical simulation environment that advances clinical practice and delivery of error-free and safe patient care through inter-professional and trans-disciplinary learning.

To promote the highest quality health, safety and satisfaction of our patients by providing our learners an immersive, innovative, safe learning environment rich in ethics, virtues, collaborative teamwork, respect, and honesty;

To provide learner-focused simulation training designed to enhance clinical knowledge, skill proficiency, competency acquisition and maintenance, risk assessment, situational awareness, decision-making, crisis-management expertise, critical transitions of care and further knowledge acquisition

To design, develop, and implement simulation training scenarios that fully incorporate state-of-the-art training techniques and equipment.

Become the recognized regional leader in the delivery of simulation training focused on high-quality effective care and patient safety to industry health care partners and the community that lack the facility, equipment and personnel of their own to do so.

When Alton Ochsner and four colleagues opened New Orleans’ first multi-specialty group practice in 1942, they envisioned providing residents of the city with the highest quality medical care delivered with an unwavering attention to the needs of patients. They had a vision for a model of care that harnessed the expertise of a team of doctors to make sure patients received individualized, comprehensive care. Ochsner has now evolved into the largest private not-for-profit healthcare system in the region, encompassing 29 owned, managed and affiliated hospitals and over 60 neighborhood health centers.

Ochsner Health System is known regionally, nationally, and internationally as the prototype integrated academic health system, delivering education that prepares clinicians to provide care that is error free, integrated, coordinated, affordable and of the highest quality.

The Ochsner Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety Center was the vision of the Academic Division physician and administrative leadership as the necessary evolution of the Ochsner medical education portfolio. The center was developed in 2016 with the Ochsner mission, vision and values in mind. As the second phase of the Center for Academic Excellence development, the Ochsner Simulation Center was founded on the commitment to multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary education, research, and development with the primary focus on excellence in patient safety and quality care. The Ochsner mission to Serve, Heal, Lead, Educate, and Innovate—along with the Ochsner Values of Patients are Always our First Priority, Approach Every Encounter with Compassion, Always Act with Integrity, Excellence is Ongoing Journey, and Teamwork Makes us Stronger—guides our simulation scenario development and training courses ranging from basic skills training to advanced innovative simulation concepts. The center provides a large array of both high fidelity and low fidelity simulation equipment along with task trainers and cutting edge simulation technology including state-of-the-art interactive video recording.
