Description

This elective is based at Ochsner Medical Center Baton Rouge. This elective is designed for students with an interest in high and low risk obstetrics, as well as general gynecology. Students will work with our certified nurse midwife and ob/gyn hospitalist to care for laboring and triage patients on the labor and delivery unit and gyn emergencies in the emergency room. Students will also participate in patient rounds on antepartum, postpartum, and gyn patients. Students will observe and participate in gyn surgeries, vaginal deliveries, and c-sections. Students will attend department conferences. Informal short topic presentations are expected during the rotation. Students will work Monday - Friday. Students are responsible for securing housing in the Baton Rouge area if needed once their rotation is approved.

Objectives

The goal of this elective is to expose the student to both high and low risk obstetrics, as well as general gynecology. Time is primarily spent in the inpatient setting, operating room, and emergency room. Responsibilities of the student are as follows:

  1. The student is expected to evaluate patients, complete documentation, and actively participate in daily rounds. Rounds are a time to test student knowledge and provide teaching and instruction with Socratic, structured teaching. Students are expected to present their patients to maximize learning.
  2. The student is expected to attend surgeries/procedure/deliveries on obstetric and gynecology patients throughout the week. Student should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the indication for the planned surgery/procedure and an overview of the technical steps, as well as learn postoperative management of post-surgical obstetrical and gynecological patients.
  3. The student is expected to attend the monthly high risk obstetrics conference and monthly journal club conference (both on Monday mornings). Brief didactic sessions will also take place during rotation.

Please log in to the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) for full details and application process and to view our elective catalog. Electives are approved with a maximum of one 4-week elective rotations and are based on academic merit and availability. Because the selection process is highly competitive, we ask that students please allow a minimum of 8 weeks for proper approval.
