Ochsner Specialty Pharmacy offers a PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency with an emphasis on specialty. It is an
ASHP-Accredited year-long program with longitudinal rotations that are designed to build upon the doctor of
pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse
patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities
including postgraduate year (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. Two positions are available each
year.
The PGY-1 Community-based Residency Program at Ochsner Specialty Pharmacy (OSP) in conjunction with Ochsner
Health System will focus on developing pharmacists as leaders within the profession with an emphasis on the role
of pharmacy in specialty pharmacy.
To develop competent practitioners with an understanding of rational drug therapy and the
ability to ensure safe,
effective, and economical use of drugs.
To provide experiences which enhances the resident’s ability to design, implement, provide and
improve specialty
pharmacy services.
To develop oral and written communication skills including enhancement of teaching skills and
scholarly activity.
To develop investigative and problem-solving skills.

Research Project - Residents will be provided a list of research
topics to choose from at which
point they will develop a protocol, submit
to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), collect data, present their research at appropriate
conference, and complete a
publishable manuscript. The resident will work under the mentorship of a preceptor to enhance
the resident’s skills in
study design, data collection, data analysis and results reporting.
Continuing Education Presentation - Resident will present two
60-minute formal continuing
education presentations for the pharmacy department.
Physician Lecture Series - Residents will present one 20-minute
pharmacotherapy topic to Internal Medicine resident physicians.
Journal Club - Residents will present one journal club per year to
the pharmacy department.
Quality Improvement Project - Residents will present a formal quality
improvement project
Collaborative Practice Agreement - Residents will gain experience
from creating a collaborative
practice agreement and evaluating current collaborative
practice agreements
Business Case - Residents will create and present a business case to
the leadership team.

Eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Louisiana
Must obtain a Louisiana pharmacy intern license by start of the program (if not licensed as a
pharmacist)
Licensed in the State of Louisiana before the program begins or shortly thereafter
