Kathy Jo Carstarphen, MD, MPH, MA, Clerkship Director for the Medicine in Society program rotation with the UQ, Ochsner Clinical School, has been awarded a Next Generation Leaders Fellowship from the American Hospital Association (AHA).

Dr. Carstarphen is one of 12 nationally who received the fellowship for 2023. She also received a John A. Hartford Foundation Age-Friendly Health Systems Scholarship covering travel expenses.

Dr. Carstarphen is board-certified in internal medicine and has been on staff at Ochsner since 2016. She has a special clinical interest in healthcare disparities, vulnerable populations, barriers to care, and improving the delivery of healthcare to all members of the New Orleans community.

The AHA Next Generation Leaders Fellowship focuses on developing leaders and empowering them to bring about real and lasting change in the hospital and health systems in which they serve.

“The annual fellowship is a unique opportunity to be paired with an executive-level mentor and other Age-Friendly Fellows on projects that deal with important issues affecting health care affordability, cost, quality, and safety,” said Dr. Carstarphen.
