Interventional Diagnostic Radiology

The Interventional Radiology – Independent Residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). It provides a well-rounded educational experience of extensive training in the interpretation of vascular imaging and the clinical management of patients treated by interventional radiologists. Physicians completing the program will be eligible for the IR/DR dual certificate and will be well positioned to become valuable members of healthcare systems. Interventional Radiology (IR) represents one of the most dynamic and exciting fields in medicine today.

The independent IR residency is 2 years in length or 1 year in length for graduates of an ESIR residency track. This training format is only available to graduates of a diagnostic radiology residency.

Further details about the Independent IR Residency can be found on SIR’s website.

We will offer two Independent Interventional Radiology fellowship positions for July 1, 2027 through the NRMP Fellowship Match. Applications will be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Virtual Interviews will begin in early 2026.

At Ochsner, who we are is all about what we do and what we believe. Our Mission, Vision and Values guide our decisions, inspire our actions, and influence our relationships with our patients, colleagues and communities. At Ochsner, we strive to be a global medical and academic leader who will change and save lives. We will shape the future of healthcare through our integrated health system, fueled by the passion and strength of our diversified team of physicians and employees. This institutional vision of Ochsner helps shape the educational program of the Department of Radiology so we can best serve the community we take care of.

The aim of our Independent Interventional Radiology program is to educate residents in a high quality department so they will become competent graduates capable of seamlessly entering a radiology practice or fellowship. We strive to create a learning environment that gives residents increasing levels of responsibility leading towards independence while still providing appropriate supervision to ensure the highest quality of care for the patients we treat in the New Orleans area, the Gulf South, and throughout the country. Our patient population continues to diversify as the Ochsner Health System expands. We aim to maintain a professional working environment that is also very collegial and supports physician well-being, the type of environment that residents will want to join or emulate in their careers. We aim to train residents to become successful consultants to referring clinicians in order to facilitate efficient healthcare delivery through timely communication and effective problem solving so they will become valuable members of healthcare systems in the future.
