Ochsner is committed to a clinically-integrated research program with the ultimate goal of improving the health and wellness of our patients and communities. And as the largest academic medical center in Louisiana, we are training the next generation of healthcare professionals to be leaders who can meet evolving healthcare challenges.
Learning objectives are clearly stated for each rotation and formal teaching sessions will be organized to meet the general and specific requirements for Ob-Gyn residency programs. These can and should be previewed in the Expectations prior to the start of each rotation. Measurement of the successful attainment of learning objectives occurs through a defined process of resident evaluation, including a 360° evaluation by peers, co-workers and patients, the CREOG in-training examination, and twice-yearly progress reviews by the program director.
First-year residents spend the majority of their time at our Ochsner Baptist location. Interns are involved with most vaginal deliveries and perform cesarean sections while on their labor unit block. They also perform minor gynecology surgeries as either primary surgeon or first assistant while at Ochsner Baptist, Ochsner Main campus, and Chabert (Houma, LA). PGY-1s have 2 months of night float and spend 2 months at Chabert. Not only do interns get considerable experience in Obstetrics, but they also have rotations in General Gynecology, Gyn Oncology and an ambulatory clinic where they will practice TVUS in the REI clinic one half day a week. Interns are expected to teach medical students at both facilities. Residents are asked to prove their competency in basic open skills, introduction to laparoscopic skills, and 2nd degree repair.
Second-year residents will have the opportunity to complete rotations through the remaining subspecialties, including Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. In this year, residents continue to expand on their surgical skills and knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology and are tasked with taking on more responsibilities and increasing their medical decision-making.
Third-year residents will have the opportunity to lead major services, including Obstetrics while on night float at Ochsner Baptist as well as Gynecology at Ochsner Baptist and Leonard Chabert Medical Center. Residents will participate in increasingly complicated surgical procedures during rotations on Gynecological Oncology, FPMRS, and benign Gynecology. Residents serve as the leader of the inpatient antepartum unit managing the high-risk obstetric patients. Additionally, residents continue to complete ambulatory rotations, including Complex Family Planning, Menopause and Survivorship, PCOS, and Transgender in addition to those listed above.
Chief residents are responsible for supervising most services, including Labor and Delivery, Gynecology, Gynecology and Oncology and are expected to perform as a junior attending. Chief residents will assign the surgical cases for the team and increase their skills in minimally invasive surgeries and complicated laparotomies. Chief residents will have an opportunity to individualize one ambulatory elective rotation based upon their interests.
