Dr. Meredith Collins, the Chief of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery Fellowship Director, trained at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She specializes in breast microsurgery and has an academic focus in aesthetic breast reconstruction. Dr. Collins previously served as the Microsurgery Fellowship Director for the University of Kansas prior to joining Ochsner. She is active in both ASPS and ASRM and serves on both the Women in Plastic Surgery Committee and Women’s Microsurgery Group Committee.

Dr. Christopher Smith, a graduate of the Tulane Plastic Surgery program, also trained under breast microsurgery legend Dr. Bob Allen and specializes in breast microsurgery.

Dr. Shoichiro Tanaka trained at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. His practice includes breast microsurgery, upper extremity and peripheral nerve surgery, lower extremity and sarcoma reconstruction.

Our newest microsurgery faculty member joining the group in August 2025 is Dr. Alejandro Gimenez, who is currently completing his microsurgery fellowship at the University of Southern California. His practice will include breast microsurgery, lymphedema surgery, and general oncologic and trauma reconstruction.
