Description
This elective is based out of two hospitals: Ochsner Medical Center-New Orleans and Ochsner Baptist- A Campus of Ochsner Medical Center. The elective is designed for students with a strong interest in gynecological oncology in an urban community. It will involve working closely with house staff and faculty in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. Students will participate in radical pelvic surgeries, familiarize themselves with common chemotherapy treatments of gynecologic malignancy, evaluate and manage patients with comprehensive care, and attend weekly tumor board and division conferences. Additionally, students will actively participate in daily rounds at both hospitals. Readings are assigned for independent study. An informal short scientific presentation is required at the end of the clerkship.
Objectives
This elective's main goal is to expose the student to the unique multidisciplinary field of gynecologic oncology. Time is spent in the inpatient and outpatient settings and the operating room. Responsibilities of the student are as follows:
- The student is expected to evaluate patients, complete documentation, and actively participate in rounds at both hospitals daily.
Rounds are a time to test student knowledge and provide teaching and instruction with Socratic, structured teaching. Students are expected to present their patients to maximize learning. - The student is expected to attend and be available for planned surgery throughout the week at both hospitals. The Chief of the service is responsible for assigned cases to students and fellow residents.
Students should be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the indication for the planned surgery and an overview of the technical steps to maximize involvement in the case. - The student is expected to attend the tumor board conference (on Wednesday morning), scheduled resident conference (on Thursday morning), and scheduled resident lectures (on Friday afternoon).
Brief didactic sessions will also take place during rotation.
Method of Evaluation
Students’ performance will be evaluated by formal and informal conferences with house staff and faculty. Home school evaluation forms are submitted to the Ob/Gyn clerkship coordinator. If your medical school requires an evaluation, it is your responsibility to notify the clerkship and to have that evaluation completed by the end of your time at Ochsner. In addition, an Ochsner evaluation will be performed in the SLOE format.

Description
The elective is designed for students with a strong interest in high-risk obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM). It will involve working closely with faculty in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Students will participate in the management of high-risk obstetrical patients, familiarize themselves with common maternal and fetal pathologies, learn to evaluate and manage patients with comprehensive care, and receive exposure to prenatal diagnostic ultrasound and fetal interventions. Additionally, students will actively participate in daily rounds on the antepartum service and didactic sessions throughout their rotation. Readings will be discussed for independent study. Informal short topic presentations are expected during the rotation.

This elective's main goal is to expose the student to the unique field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. You will learn appropriate management of common high-risk maternal and fetal conditions while providing compassionate and comprehensive care. You will learn to identify, diagnose, and manage medical complications of pregnancy and pregnancy specific conditions. Time is spent in the inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as the operating room. The student is expected to be an integral part of the MFM team.
- Evaluate patients, complete documentation, and actively participate in rounds on the antepartum service daily
- Refine history and physical examination skills
- Formulate a detailed assessment and plan
- Learn to prioritize management of different patient problems
- Learn cost-effective evaluation of obstetrical, medical and surgical problems during pregnancy
- Rounds are a time to test student knowledge and provide teaching and instruction with Socratic, structured teaching. Students are expected to present their patients to maximize learning.
- The student is expected to attend planned surgeries/procedure/deliveries on MFM patients throughout the week.
- Be able to demonstrate knowledge of the indication for the planned surgery/procedure and an overview of the technical steps to maximize involvement in the case.
- Learn postoperative management of complicated post-surgical obstetrical patients
- The student is expected to attend the Fetal board conference (usually second Tuesday of the month), Maternal board conference (usually Wednesday of the month), scheduled resident conference (on Thursday morning), and scheduled resident lectures (on Friday afternoon).
- Brief didactic sessions will also take place during rotation. Student is expected to present at least 2 topics of interest (5-10 minutes) at separate times through the month.

Description
During your Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS) rotation, you will learn about evaluation and management of patients with pelvic floor disorders such as pelvic organ prolapse, urinary and bowel incontinence, fistulas, and bladder pain syndromes through time spent with our faculty and residents in outpatient clinics/procedures and surgery. This elective is based out of two hospitals: Ochsner Medical Center-New Orleans and Ochsner Baptist- A Campus of Ochsner Medical Center.
Objectives
This elective's main goal is to expose the student to the field of Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. Time is spent in the inpatient and outpatient settings and the operating room. You will be expected to read and prepare for clinic and surgery ahead of time so that you can optimize your learning and participation. With the guidance of our URPS resident, you will be expected to present postoperative patients on rounds and help formulate their postoperative care plans.
