Ochsner is committed to a clinically-integrated research program with the ultimate goal of improving the health and wellness of our patients and communities. And as the largest academic medical center in Louisiana, we are training the next generation of healthcare professionals to be leaders who can meet evolving healthcare challenges.
Residents work closely with staff physicians on each rotation. Most rotations have junior residents paired with a senior resident.
In our Outpatient Diagnostic Center, residents will rotate through body imaging and musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology. This body imaging rotation incorporates CT, Ultrasound and MRI. MSK will include MRI, CT and plain films performed in the Outpatient Center. All other rotations will take place in the main department.
The Neuroradiology experience includes acute hospital imaging to support our very busy stroke and neurosurgery programs as well as highly advanced outpatient neuroimaging.
Our inpatient and outpatient Ultrasound rotations include high volumes including transplant and vascular ultrasound. Ultrasound at Ochsner has long been considered a great strength of our department, aided by extensive collaboration with the transplant team.
The Chest rotation incorporates high volumes of CT scans and plain films, working closely with staff specialists.
The Breast Imaging rotation is performed in the Tansey Breast Center, located in our Benson Cancer Center, which is part of the OMC Complex. The Tansey Breast Center offers multidisciplinary, patient centered care. Residents have broad exposure in digital mammography, tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced mammography, hands-on breast ultrasound, and breast MRI, including performance of biopsies using all modalities.
Interventional Radiology has become a major strength of the Ochsner residency, where residents work directly with staff in a busy, high-level department with many well-trained Body and Neuro Interventionalists supporting OMC’s top ranked transplant department, comprehensive stroke center and growing cancer services. Residents participate in body and neuro IR cases. The residency offers the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway, allowing residents to enter advanced one-year positions in independent IR programs. We also have one integrated IR resident per year.
The Nuclear Medicine program is growing, as Ochsner has built a new Cyclotron and is investing heavily in cancer services. Pediatrics, fluoroscopy and plain film radiography are all performed in the main department as well. Ochsner has partnered with MD Anderson to increase our Cancer Services and clinical trials offered to Ochsner patients.
Residents also participate in evening and night rotations where they interpret acute hospital and Emergency Department scans. There is complete 24/7/365 staff coverage interpreting imaging studies with residents after hours and on weekends.

Ochsner Health is the leading nonprofit healthcare system in the Gulf South, serving patients across Louisiana, Mississippi, and surrounding regions.
