Department of Emergency Medicine Chair
Program Director
Dr. McCoin, the Chair, and Dr. Suau, the Program Director, bring over 25 years of combined experience in resident education and leadership to Ochsner. Education is their passion and it pervades the department. Dr. McCoin came to Ochsner Medical Center from Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she served as the Keith D Wrenn Vice Chair for Education and Residency Program Director. Dr. Suau previous was in residency leadership at Maimonides and subsequently served as Residency Program Director at LSU-New Orleans. They both came to Ochsner as it is a phenomenal place to build an academic department. With ~70,000 patients visits / year, a robust mix of patient cases many with significant medical acuity, state-of-the art resources as a quaternary referral center, a focus on efficient and thorough patient-centered care, and dedicated Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Ochsner was the ideal place for an Emergency Medicine Residency Program. With a thoughtfully designed and innovative didactic curriculum, top-notch clinical training, and a program that values resident input and feedback, Drs. McCoin and Suau, along with the entire faculty, have created a place to train that is supportive, collaborative, and places the patient and the trainee at the heart of what they do.
On the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana as a category 4 storm. Louisiana was in the midst of its largest surge of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with over 900 COVID positive patients at Ochsner Health facilities.
