Ochsner is committed to a clinically-integrated research program with the ultimate goal of improving the health and wellness of our patients and communities. The Ochsner Fellowship program in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) is a one-year program.
Why New Orleans, one may ask. It is one of the iconic southern cities arising from the Mississippi River delta in the heart of The Sportsman’s Paradise. It is the birthplace of Jazz. It is a city that is renowned for its food, architecture, Mardi Gras and its resiliency. New Orleans quickly feels like home to those not from here. While you are here for a visit, you may feel compelled to join a second line and march through the city, grab some beignets at Café Du Monde, dinner at Commander’s Palace, or cocktails at Laffite’s. As we say here, laissez bon temp rouler – let the good times roll.
Training at Ochsner offers fellows the opportunity to learn within one of the Gulf South’s leading healthcare systems, where innovation, collaboration, and clinical excellence are central to patient care. Fellows work alongside experienced faculty members who are dedicated to advancing the science and practice of regional anesthesia through education, research, and the application of cutting-edge techniques. This supportive learning environment allows trainees to develop the technical expertise, clinical judgment, and procedural confidence necessary to manage complex perioperative and acute pain conditions.
The fellowship emphasizes a comprehensive approach to pain management that integrates advanced regional anesthesia techniques with multidisciplinary patient care. Fellows gain valuable experience caring for a diverse patient population undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures while developing expertise in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, perioperative pain management strategies, and enhanced recovery protocols. Exposure to evolving technologies and evidence-based practices helps prepare graduates to remain at the forefront of the specialty throughout their careers.
In addition to clinical training, fellows are encouraged to participate in research, quality improvement initiatives, and educational activities that foster lifelong learning and professional development. Collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals further strengthens the educational experience and highlights the importance of team-based care in achieving optimal patient outcomes.
Through rigorous clinical experiences, dedicated mentorship, and a commitment to innovation, the Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship Program at Ochsner Health equips physicians with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to improve perioperative care, enhance patient recovery, and contribute to the future of pain medicine and anesthesiology.
