Transplant hepatology is a highly specialized field dedicated to the care of patients with advanced liver disease, liver failure, and those requiring or undergoing liver transplantation. As the prevalence of chronic liver conditions continues to rise and advances in transplantation expand treatment possibilities, there is an increasing need for physicians with expertise in the comprehensive management of complex hepatobiliary disorders. The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Ochsner Health provides advanced training that prepares physicians to deliver exceptional care while contributing to the ongoing advancement of liver disease treatment and transplantation medicine.

As one of the region’s leading centers for liver disease management and transplantation, Ochsner offers fellows access to a diverse patient population and a broad range of clinical experiences. Fellows work alongside experienced hepatologists, transplant surgeons, gastroenterologists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams dedicated to providing coordinated, patient-centered care throughout every stage of the transplant journey. This collaborative environment allows trainees to develop expertise in the evaluation, treatment, and long-term management of patients with acute and chronic liver disease while gaining valuable insight into the complexities of liver transplantation.

The fellowship emphasizes a comprehensive approach to hepatology that integrates advanced clinical care, evidence-based medicine, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Fellows gain experience managing conditions such as cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, autoimmune disorders, liver cancer, and complications related to end-stage liver disease. Exposure to transplant evaluation, organ allocation, perioperative management, and post-transplant care provides a well-rounded educational experience that prepares graduates for independent practice in transplant hepatology.

In addition to clinical training, fellows are encouraged to engage in research, scholarly activities, and quality improvement initiatives that promote innovation and lifelong learning. Faculty mentorship supports both professional development and academic growth, helping fellows achieve their career goals while advancing the field of hepatology.

Through rigorous clinical experiences, dedicated mentorship, and exposure to cutting-edge transplantation medicine, the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Ochsner Health equips physicians with the expertise, leadership skills, and compassionate approach necessary to care for patients with complex liver disease and improve outcomes through advanced hepatology and transplantation care.
