Educational Experience - Urology Residency Program

The Ochsner urology residency provides a balanced education in cognition, attitudes, and skills that will be necessary for a successful urologic practice. The residents participate in over 3580 surgical cases annually and have the opportunity to participate in over 1900 office based procedures. The urology faculty maintain an active role in teaching and education. They are present for our weekly didactic sessions. These didactic sessions include a monthly journal club, indications conference, patient safety/quality improvement conference, and a multi-disciplinary urology-oncology conference. Weekly educational conferences are held in which topics from the AUA’s core curriculum are discussed. Other topics are presented by guest speakers from other disciplines. The department sponsors a visiting professor every year as well.

Resident Education Committee

A resident education committee composed of faculty leaders, with the input from the residents, meets semi-annually to review academic conferences and other administrative aspects of resident training. Research projects are reviewed monthly to assist in getting them to publication.

Faculty Mentors

All residents are assigned a faculty mentor. The resident and mentor meet bi-annually to discuss individual goals, academic progress, and any other topic the resident may want to discuss. The mentor is tasked with helping the resident achieve his or her goals.

Publications

All residents are required to submit one paper a year for publication with staff guidance. Most of these papers are presented by the resident at specialty society meetings. Residents are allowed to attend as many meetings as their research generates.

In-Service Exams

The yearly in-service exam is taken by all residents. The exam is administered by the Office of Education of the American Urological Association. The teaching program and conferences are designed to prepare the resident for board certification.
