A one year program in Sports Medicine is offered for physicians who have satisfactorily completed an approved residency in Orthopedic Surgery and who are eligible for examination by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Ochsner Sports Medicine is a subspecialty of Orthopedic Surgery that deals with the care of sports-related injuries. Specifically, it involves the diagnosis and treatment of bone, ligament, and tendon injuries of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle.
Sports-related injuries require specialized care for proper healing. To provide proper diagnosis and prevent future injuries, Ochsner has developed the Ochsner Sports Medicine Program to provide diagnostic and treatment facilities for all ranges of athletes and their injuries. The Ochsner Sports Medicine Program provides a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of sports- and fitness-related injuries, and provides preventive care through the promotion of wellness, fitness, performance enhancement, and education.
The fellow works closely with the staff in all aspects of his practice. This includes participation in outpatient office practice, surgical practice, and team coverage activities such as training room visits and game coverage. The surgical experience encompasses all aspects of sports medicine focusing especially on surgery of the knee, shoulder and elbow (arthroscopic and open procedures).
