Current Fellow - Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship
Joseph Prechter, DO
I was born and raised here in New Orleans before graduating from LSU in Baton Rouge. I then moved to Mississippi where I went to graduate school and medical school at William Carey University. It was on my third-year rotations where I was first exposed to the field of palliative medicine. My wife and I both completed internal medicine residency with LSU in Lafayette at Ochsner University Hospital and Clinics before moving back to the New Orleans area. For the last several years I have practiced outpatient medicine at a clinic in the lower ninth ward, and now I am excited to start my fellowship training here at Ochsner.
Program Highlights
Settings include a quaternary care center, community hospitals, and local hospice agencies.
Fellows gain experience with busy inpatient consult services, on our very own hospice and palliative medicine inpatient unit, and within our robust outpatient clinics.
Protected time for learning with didactic lectures, journal club, and national conference attendance.
Multidisciplinary team with physicians from different backgrounds (IM, EM, PEDs, Psychiatry and Geriatrics), advanced practice providers, licensed clinic social workers with specialized palliative training, and a dedicated board certified chaplain.
We are the only palliative care team in Louisiana and the Gulf South to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval!
