The Palliative Medicine and Supportive Medical Service has made a commitment to its departmental mission and vision, therefore, will pursue external certification as a means to achieve an industry recognized validation of quality improvement capability based upon a common set of specific standards.

The OMC Palliative Medicine and Supportive Medical Service will provide state of the art palliative care that is compassionate, interdisciplinary and integrated to enhance quality of life and reduce suffering of patient, families, and the healthcare team when faced with serious illness.

Ochsner will be renowned for its focus on the whole person, for its shared decision-making approach, and for its commitment to respecting our patients’ wishes in every aspect of their care. This approach will pervade our culture, and Ochsner will become a Center of Excellence for Palliative Medicine. Our clinical expertise will be enhanced by our infrastructure, technological tools, processes, education, and training. This will empower our teams across the system to provide the full spectrum of palliative care services.

Program Highlights

Settings include a quaternary care center, community hospitals, and local hospice agencies.

Fellows gain experience with busy inpatient consult services, on our very own hospice and palliative medicine inpatient unit, and within our robust outpatient clinics.

Protected time for learning with didactic lectures, journal club, and national conference attendance.

Multidisciplinary team with physicians from different backgrounds (IM, EM, PEDs, Psychiatry and Geriatrics), advanced practice providers, licensed clinic social workers with specialized palliative training, and a dedicated board certified chaplain.
