The Department of Surgery has divisions in Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular Surgery. The division of General Surgery includes Acute Care/Critical Care, Bariatrics & Foregut, Breast, Endocrine, and Surgical Oncology. There is a separate Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery, through which all General Surgery residents rotate during their first and fifth years.
Dr. Blackstock joined Ochsner in 2022. He offers surgical therapies for nearly all areas of vascular disease including thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, chronic-limb threatening ischemia, thoracic outlet syndrome, hemodialysis access, and venous disease (including varicose veins).

Genevieve Hayek, MD, FACS, is a vascular surgeon at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Hayek sees patients at Ochsner Medical Center - New Orleans and Ochsner Health Center - Kenner. Dr. Hayek has expertise in treating a host of vascular conditions including aortic disease, carotid disease, venous disease, peripheral arterial disease, dialysis access, critical limb threatening ischemia and mesenteric disease. She has a particular interest in complex limb salvage patients.
Dr. Hayek earned her Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Columbia University in New York in 2010, and her medical degree from the University of Queensland/Ochsner Clinical School in 2014. She completed her general surgery residency at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in 2020, and her Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis in 2022. She remained as faculty at Washington University after graduating from fellowship before returning to Ochsner in 2025.
She is double board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is a member of the Society of Vascular Surgery as well as the Vascular and Endovascular Surgical Society, where she has served on several national committees and was chair of a national committee dedicated to advancing vascular surgery exposure to medical students across the country. She also serves as the faculty chair of the Ochsner Women in Surgery group, hosting regular book clubs at her home for residents and faculty.

Charles Leithead, MD is a vascular surgeon and medical director of the Ochsner Vein Clinic at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Leithead provides care for patients across the greater New Orleans region, including the Northshore and parts of Mississippi. As medical director of The Ochsner Vein Clinic, providing comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of vascular conditions, including aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), spider veins and varicose veins. Dr. Leithead is experienced in both open surgical procedures and minimally invasive techniques to restore blood flow and improve vascular health.
A native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Dr. Leithead earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences with a minor in French from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and completed an integrated vascular surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He holds Physician in Vascular Interpretation certification from the Alliance for Certification and Advancement and has clinical and research interests in limb salvage and improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Leithead has been recognized for his excellence in teaching and patient care, receiving awards such as the William D. Jordan Jr. Award of Excellence and Integrity, the Ochsner Medical School Teaching Excellence Award for the Department of Surgery, and recognition as a finalist for Ochsner Health System Physician of the Year.

Samuel R. Money attended the State University of New York College of Medicine – SUNY Downstate and graduated with distinction. He trained in vascular surgery at Ochsner under the tutelage of Larry H.Hollier and John Ochsner. He later worked at Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he served as professor and chair of the Department of Surgery. He has served in numerous leadership positions including presidency of the society for clinical vascular surgery, the southern association of vascular surgery and the vascular and endovascular society.

Dr. Ross Parkerson is a staff surgeon in the section of vascular surgery at Ochsner Health. He earned his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. He then returned home to attend Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans where he earned his medical degree and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Afterward, he moved to Tampa, Florida, where completed integrated vascular surgery residency at the University of South Florida. While in Tampa, Dr. Parkerson was able to participate in numerous clinical trials of novel endovascular devices designed for the treatment of complex thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. He treats all varieties of vascular pathology and has specific interest in thoracic outlet syndrome, peripheral artery disease and aortic aneurysm repair. He actively contributes to resident and medical student education with his involvement in clinical research, journal clubs and case conferences.

Dr. Sternbergh's educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Brown University and an MD from Duke University School of Medicine. He performed his general surgical training at the Medical College of Virginia and his vascular fellowship at Emory University. Dr Sternbergh has been on staff at Ochsner since 1996. He is nationally recognized for his expertise in Vascular Surgery, and is the author of more than 100 scientific publications and book chapters pertaining to vascular disease. Dr. Sternbergh literally wrote the book on the endovascular treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Dean Yamaguchi, MD, specializes in vascular surgery at Ochsner Health. Dr. Yamaguchi was born in Metairie, Louisiana, and grew up in Southern California.
