The mission of the Ochsner Clinic Foundation Family Medicine Residency Program is to increase the primary care physician workforce in St. Tammany Parish by training a diverse cohort of competent, well-rounded physicians that will provide comprehensive, high quality, compassionate healthcare to the community we serve.

Aims

To accomplish this mission, the Program has the following competency-based aims:

  1. Train residents to provide competent care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting not limited by organ system, gender, or age (Patient Care & Medical Knowledge). Measured by:
    • Clinic Preceptor evaluations
    • Block evaluations
    • Direct observation at least quarterly in both clinic and hospital
    • Procedure logs
    • Mandatory Guideline Lecture
    • Milestones
    • Achievement of Quality/HEDIS Metrics as reported through patient registries
    • Maintenance of inpatient length of stay benchmarks
    • Accuracy of documentation on inpatient and outpatient chart audits
    • Achieving hospital stewardship goals
    • Incorporating DEI/bias training
    • Board pass rate
    • ITE scores
    • Required ongoing AAFP questions
  2. Train residents to communicate effectively with patients, consultants, and the healthcare team (Interpersonal Communication Skills). Measured by:
    • Quarterly direct observation
    • Peer and clinical staff evaluations
    • Review of patient safety events
    • Milestones
    • Incorporation DEI/Bias training
  3. Train residents to participate in and navigate the broader healthcare system (Systems Based Practice). Measured by:
    • Participation on clinic and hospital committees
    • Participation in patient safety conferences
    • Direct observation of inpatient transitions of care using IPASS method
    • Appropriate use of EMR
    • Participation in legislative advocacy efforts
    • Annual program wide QI project
    • Review of community health needs assessment
    • DEI training and policies
  4. Train residents to be models of professionalism (Professionalism). Measured by:
    • Timely documentation in hospital and clinic
    • Conference attendance
    • Completion of ethics mandatories
    • Peer and team member evaluations
    • Wellness education and opportunities
    • Review of patient safety events
  5. Create and sustain an environment of inquiry (Practice-based Learning and Improvement). Measured by:
    • Annual program wide QI project
    • Mandatory evidence-based medicine lectures
    • Require and review resident self-learning plan semi-annually
    • Semi-annual resident performance review
    • Semi- annual milestone review
    • Scholarly activity compliance by both faculty and residents
    • Quarterly faculty development activities
